A founder-led snack brand that came back for a second run with one request: keep everything identical, just make the bag bigger. This page documents exactly what carried over from the first order, what had to be re-specified, and the one cost that caught them out — import duty on the Canadian side.
Note: the brand and founder name have been changed at the client's request. Order quantities, the size change, the freight arrangement and the duty issue below are from the actual order correspondence.
What Did They Want To Change?
Their reorder request, in their own words, was simple: "Could I do 5.1" x 7.1" of 2 x 500 bags, with the same details and everything else remaining the same as before, just upping the size a bit." Here is what that actually involved:
- ✗"Everything else the same" is not one thing. Artwork, material, finish, zipper and quantity per SKU each have to be confirmed separately on a re-quote.
- ✗A bigger bag changes the unit price. More film, more ink coverage, more freight weight per thousand.
- ✗Artwork has to be re-laid to the new dieline. They supplied print-ready PDFs against the previous size.
- ✗Import duty landed on them, not us. The shipment reached Canada and the carrier required the recipient to settle customs duty before release.
- ✗They were a one-person operation with no import broker, so a duty notice is a real operational problem, not a minor admin task.
How Did Achieve Pack Handle It?
Two SKUs, 500 Each
The reorder was split 2 × 500 bags rather than forced into a single 1,000-piece SKU. Digital printing makes that split affordable — this is the practical reason low-MOQ digital runs suit small brands.
Size Upsized To 5.1" × 7.1"
Roughly 130 × 180 mm — a meaningful jump in fill volume from their original format. We re-quoted against the new dimensions before touching the artwork.
New Proof Issued, Not Assumed
We issued a fresh proof for the new size and waited on written artwork confirmation before releasing to production. Nothing was inferred from the previous order.
Duty Issue Flagged And Pushed
When the shipment was held, we chased it rather than waiting: the recipient has to contact the local authorities to pay the customs duties before the carrier releases. We told them plainly, with the tracking reference, so they could act the same day.

The reorder shipped, cleared customs once the duty was settled, and the brand stayed on the same structure and finish as the first run. Their feedback after receiving the pouches:

What This Case Study Does NOT Mean for You
Read this before you assume your reorder will be this simple:
- • Upsizing is not free. This client's unit price moved because film area, ink coverage and freight weight all moved. Ask for the re-quote before you approve the new size.
- • Import duty and taxes are yours, not the supplier's. This shipment was held until the recipient paid Canadian customs duty. We do not control the rate, and no supplier does — budget for it and know your HS code.
- • A founder-operated brand feels duty notices hardest. If you have no broker, build the duty into your landed cost on the first order so the second one is not a surprise.
- • "Same as last time" still needs a written confirmation. We re-proofed. If your supplier skips the proof on a size change, the error is yours to absorb.
- • 2 × 500 is not always the cheapest split. It was right here because of digital print and a low total volume. At higher volumes one SKU per run prices better.
