Where Compostable Coffee Bags Are NOT the Right Answer
- NOT curbside compostable. ASTM D6400 certification means industrial composting facilities. If your customers have no access to one, the bag ends up in landfill — a recyclable mono-PE pouch (store drop-off #4) may be the more honest claim.
- NOT for 18+ month shelf life. Compostable barriers run higher OTR than foil laminates. For long shelf life or very oily dark roasts, ask us to test your beans before you commit.
- NOT interchangeable with "recyclable." Recyclable and compostable are different end-of-life paths — printing both claims on one bag invites greenwashing complaints under rules like California SB 343.
- Not sure which structure fits? The $40+ sample kit is credited to your first order — seal it, valve it, and cup the coffee after 30 days. Or reach us at /support/contact.
5 Common Coffee Packaging Problems (And Solutions)
Packaging coffee properly is critical for maintaining its quality, flavor, and shelf-life. Here are 5 common pain points and how our engineering solves them.
1. Loss of Flavor & Aroma (CO2 Buildup)
Solution: One-way degassing valves to release CO2 while keeping oxygen out, ensuring freshness.
2. Exposure to Light, Moisture & Oxygen
Solution: Multi-layer high-barrier films (like AL or metallized PET) that provide extreme protection against UV and humidity.
3. Poor Resealability After Opening
Solution: Premium press-to-close zippers or pocket zippers for reliable, airtight resealing.
4. Punctures or Leaks During Shipping
Solution: High tensile strength laminates and reinforced wide side-seals to survive transit.
5. Sustainability & Eco-Friendly Demands
Solution: Innovative Recyclable Mono-PE or Industrially Compostable packaging structures.

Ryan Wong's Engineering Notebook
Entry: Overcoming Degassing Valve Failures in High-Altitude Transport
"When we first started shipping freshly roasted beans across the Rockies, clients reported their bags were either bursting or arriving flat and stale. Standard valves were failing under pressure differentials."
"I engineered a custom nylon-filtered one-way valve with a tighter silicone oil seal, calibrated precisely to 0.05 bar release pressure. We tested it in a vacuum chamber simulating 10,000 ft elevation. Result? Zero bursts, perfect aroma retention, and a shelf-life extension of 4 weeks."

Coffee Packaging Engineering & Valve Testing
Roasting coffee releases carbon dioxide and is extremely sensitive to oxygen. We validate our degassing valve release pressure, OTR/WVTR barrier, and heat seal strength to ensure coffee aroma protection and long-term shelf life.
MOCON OTR Barrier Test
Tested under ASTM D3985 to preserve coffee aromatics and lock out oxygen.
GC-MS Solvent Residue
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry guarantees zero odor transfer into coffee beans.
Heat Seal Strength (ASTM F88)
Optimized seal strength to support heavy 1kg coffee bags without seam ruptures.
Valve Seating Pressure
Tested pressure release to expel internal CO₂ while maintaining a hermetic oxygen seal.
Puncture Test (ASTM F1306)
Prevents whole roasted coffee beans from piercing the inner laminate layers.
VFFS Line Speed Match
Sliding friction coefficient optimized for high-speed automatic bagging lines.
