What is a 3-Side Seal Pouch?
A 3-side seal pouch (also called flat pouch or sachet) is sealed on three sides with an open top for filling. It is the most economical flexible packaging format — you pay for film and seal, nothing else. Ideal for samples, single-serve products, and lightweight items.
Key Advantages:
- ✓ Most cost-effective pouch format
- ✓ Efficient material usage (less waste)
- ✓ Compact shipping and storage
- ✓ Quick to fill and seal
- ✓ Easy tear-open access
3-Side vs 4-Side Seal
3-Side Seal
Made from folded film, sealed on 3 sides:
- • One folded edge (no seal)
- • Two side seals
- • Bottom or top seal after filling
- • Most economical option
4-Side Seal
Made from two separate sheets:
- • Sealed on all 4 edges
- • Slightly more surface area
- • Different front/back materials possible
- • Slightly higher cost

Still Not Sure? Straight Answers
"Are sachets eco-friendly?"
Standard laminates are not recyclable. Compostable PLA and paper/PLA options are available — certified for industrial composting (EN 13432), not home compost.
"What's the minimum order?"
500 pcs with digital printing, 2–3 week lead time.
"Can they have zippers?"
Yes — but if resealability matters, a stand-up pouch is usually better value.
"Can I get samples?"
The $40+ sample kit ships with multiple materials and sizes — credited to your first order.

Material Comparison
| Material Type | Barrier | Cost | Eco-Friendly | Recommended Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PET/PE Clear | Medium | $ | Not recyclable (multi-material laminate) | Sugar packets, dry foods |
| Aluminum Foil Laminate | High | $$ | Not recyclable | Sauces, pharmaceuticals |
| Kraft Paper Laminate | Medium | $$ | Natural look; layers not separable for recycling | Tea bags, spices |
| PLA Compostable | Low-Medium | $$$ | Compostable (industrial facilities only, EN 13432) | Organic foods, samples |
Material Selection Guide
Pick by what your product needs to survive, not by the greenest-sounding label. Sauces and anything moisture-sensitive need aluminum foil laminate. If your customers have access to industrial composting, PLA works. Standard PET/PE laminates are the cheapest option — but they are not recyclable, so don't claim they are.
What Flat Pouches Will NOT Do
- NOT stand up on a shelf. No gusset means the pouch lies flat. If shelf presence drives your sales, step up to a stand-up pouch.
- NOT hold liquids for 12+ months without foil. A sauce sachet in a standard laminate gives you months, not a year. Long shelf life needs a foil or high-barrier structure — tell us your target and we will spec it.
- NOT resealable by default. Flat pouches are tear-open, single-use. A zipper is possible, but at that point a stand-up pouch is usually better value.
- NOT the green option by default. Standard PET/PE and foil laminates are not recyclable. If disposal matters to your customers, ask for the compostable PLA version (industrial composting only) or a mono-material structure.

5 Common Flat Pouch Problems (And Solutions)
Weak Seals & Leaks
Solution: Reinforced wide seal borders and high-temp laminating for secure edges.
Messy, Uneven Opening
Solution: Precision laser scoring and V-notch for a clean, straight tear.
Moisture Caking in Powders
Solution: High-barrier AL or VMPET layers to block moisture.
Blurry Print on Small Sizes
Solution: High-res rotogravure printing for crisp text.
Slow Packing on Auto-Lines
Solution: Custom slip additives for low friction and fast filling.

When a flat pouch is NOT the right call
- →Your product needs to stand on a shelf — flat pouches don't; a stand-up or box-bottom structure does the job.
- →Heavy or bulky fills — a flat pouch's weak point is its seams under weight; heavy contents belong in a gusseted or box-bottom structure.
- →You're judging from renders alone — flat pouches collapse and crinkle in real life; the sample kit shows the actual fill behaviour.
The $40+ Sample Kit lets you fill it with your product and see how it sits — before you commit artwork.
HP Indigo Color Accuracy & Printing Proofs
Low-MOQ runs must deliver enterprise-level visual branding. We inspect color alignment tolerances, ink adhesion strength, and white underprint opacity using spectrophotometer color matching to ensure pixel-perfect pouch graphics.
Color Matching (X-Rite)
Spectrophotometer validation ensuring brand color consistency across batches.
Ink Adhesion Test (ASTM D3359)
Tape peel test to ensure ink does not peel or scratch during shipping and handling.
White Ink Underprint Opacity
Ensures rich, vibrant colors when printing on transparent or brown kraft films.
Digital Press Calibration
HP-validated polymer ink integration, offering excellent heat and rub resistance.
Lamination Peeling Force
Ensures the printed film layer never delaminates or separates from barrier layers.
VFFS Low-Temp Sealing
Ensures digital-printed pouches seal perfectly on standard heat-sealer jaws.
Packaging Transformation for Flat Pouches | Three-Side Sealed Bags
See how upgrading from generic commoditized bags to precision-engineered flexible barrier packaging eliminates transport failures and boosts shelf authority.
Standard / Generic Packaging (Before)
Standard stock bags fail under transit stress and expose sensitive goods to moisture, UV light, and oxygen.

- Rapid Oxidation & Flavor DegradationCheap films allow O2 & moisture ingress, spoiling contents in < 30 days.
- High Seal Breakage in TransitThin seams fail under drop tests, leading to customer refunds & lost trust.
- Heavy Plastic Tax PenaltiesMulti-layer unrecyclable packaging incurs up to €800/ton in EU PPWR fines.
- High MOQs & Plate Cost FrictionTraditional printers force 10,000+ unit minimums and $1,500 cylinder fees.
Achieve Pack / Pouch Eco Solution (After)
Custom engineered multi-layer pouch structure tailored to your exact moisture barrier, seal strength, and aesthetic requirements.
