Home Compostable Packaging Your Customers Can Compost in Their Own Bin

Most "compostable" claims quietly require an industrial facility your customers don't have. OK Compost HOME and AS 5810 certified pouches break down at backyard temperatures — a disposal promise your customers can actually keep.

Home compostable packaging in garden compost

The Short Version

If you sell to eco-conscious buyers in Australia, the UK, or Germany, home compostability is the claim they can verify themselves: the pouch goes into a garden compost bin at 20–30°C and breaks down in roughly 6–12 months — no commercial facility required. Our OK Compost HOME and AS 5810 certified structures suit dry goods like tea, snacks, and supplements, and you can start with a 500 pc digitally printed run in 2–3 weeks before scaling.

Solving Core Packaging Challenges for Home Compostable Packaging | OK Home Certified Pouches

Concise B2B technical benchmarks designed to eliminate transit failures, regulatory penalties, and shelf-life loss.

CHALLENGE 01

Structure Approved Before It Is Ever Tested

Risk: The laminate looks right on paper and fails on your actual product, wasting the run.

Engineer Solution

Sample Packs in the Exact Structure, Tested With Your Product

You run your own fill and shelf-life test before any tooling is cut.

CHALLENGE 02

Barrier Numbers Missing From the Quote

Risk: You approve a film without knowing its oxygen or moisture transmission rate, then find out on shelf.

Engineer Solution

OTR and WVTR Stated on Every Quotation

The barrier figure is on the quote, not buried in a datasheet you never see.

CHALLENGE 03

Sustainability Claim Without a Certificate Behind It

Risk: An unsubstantiated compostable or recycled claim fails retailer and marketplace review.

Engineer Solution

Certificate Numbers Issued With the Quote

Home Compostable: The Real Deal

Most 'compostable' packaging needs industrial facilities at 60°C. Not ours. Home compostable means exactly that—your customers toss it in their backyard bin, and it becomes soil. No special trips, no hoping their city has the right facilities.

Why This Actually Matters:

  • Works in regular backyard compost bins—no special facilities
  • Breaks down at 20-30°C, not industrial temps
  • True circularity your customers can see with their own eyes
  • The strongest sustainability story you can tell
  • Certified: TÜV Austria OK Compost HOME, AS 5810 (Australia)

5 Common Home Compostable Problems (And Solutions)

!Low Moisture & Vapor Barrier

Problem: Home compostable films often lack strong moisture barriers, leading to premature structural breakdown when packaging moist or oily foods.

Solution: We utilize multi-layer co-extrusion incorporating cellulose or high-barrier bio-coatings that protect the product while maintaining 100% home compostability.

!Inconsistent Backyard Degradation

Problem: Backyard compost heaps rarely reach the high, stable temperatures of industrial facilities, causing packaging to remain intact for years.

Solution: Our materials are formulated with ambient-temperature active biopolymers (like PBS and starch blends) certified to decompose within 180 days at 20-30°C.

!Weak Heat Seals and Leaks

Problem: Compostable polymers have a narrow heat-sealing window, resulting in weak seal joints or packaging failures on high-speed filling lines.

Solution: We integrate specialized bio-sealant layers with low seal initiation temperatures (SIT) to ensure airtight, high-strength seals without melting the outer layer.

!Chemical Ecotoxicity from Inks

Problem: Standard industrial inks and adhesives can release harmful chemical residues or heavy metals into home gardens, disrupting soil ecosystems.

Solution: We exclusively print with water-based and soy-based vegetable inks, using compostable adhesives certified toxic-free for soil microflora.

!Low Puncture and Tear Resistance

Problem: Eco-friendly films can be brittle and prone to tearing during transit and handling.

Solution: We blend highly flexible PBAT with tensile-strong PBS to create a resilient laminate structure that survives rough logistics without sacrificing eco-friendliness.

  • • Premium products where eco-value justifies cost

Also Works For...

  • • Brands with educational consumer base
  • • Products not needing high barrier
  • • Regional launches in eco-conscious areas

Not Recommended If...

What Home Compostable Packaging Will NOT Do

  • • NOT the same as "biodegradable". Home compostable is a certified standard (TÜV OK Compost HOME, AS 5810) with disintegration and ecotoxicity testing. "Biodegradable" on its own is an unverified claim — don't blur the two on your pack.
  • • NOT a high-barrier solution. Home compostable structures are typically lower barrier than industrial compostable or foil laminates — plan on 6–12 month shelf life for dry goods, and test first if your product is oily or moisture-sensitive.
  • • NOT litter-proof or marine-safe. It needs an active compost bin to break down. It will not reliably disappear in landfill, soil, or the ocean — never print that claim.
  • • NOT the Seedling logo. The seedling mark means industrial compostable (EN 13432). Home compostable uses the OK Compost HOME or AS 5810 marks — mixing them on artwork misleads your customers.

Questions We Get Asked

What's the difference between home and industrial compostable?▼
Home compostable packaging breaks down in backyard compost bins at ambient temperatures (20-30°C). Industrial compostable requires commercial facilities with controlled high temperatures (58°C+). Home compostable is more accessible to consumers but typically has lower barrier properties.
How long does home composting take?▼
Our home compostable pouches typically break down in 6-12 months in an active backyard compost. Factors affecting speed include temperature, moisture, turning frequency, and the existing microbial activity in your compost.
Can I put home compostable packaging in my green bin?▼
It depends on your local council's guidelines. Many municipal green bin programs only accept industrial compostable materials. Home compostable items are designed for backyard composting. Check with your local waste authority.
Is home compostable packaging suitable for all products?▼
Home compostable materials typically have low-medium barrier properties, making them best for dry goods with 3-6 month shelf life. For products requiring high barrier (coffee, supplements), we recommend industrial compostable or recyclable options.
