Digital Printed Retort Bags | VitoPouch 'Soft Can' High-Barrier Solution Specifications
Solving Core Packaging Challenges for Digital Printed Retort Bags | VitoPouch 'Soft Can' High-Barrier Solution
Concise B2B technical benchmarks designed to eliminate transit failures, regulatory penalties, and shelf-life loss.
Structure Approved Before It Is Ever Tested
Risk: The laminate looks right on paper and fails on your actual product, wasting the run.
Sample Packs in the Exact Structure, Tested With Your Product
You run your own fill and shelf-life test before any tooling is cut.
Barrier Numbers Missing From the Quote
Risk: You approve a film without knowing its oxygen or moisture transmission rate, then find out on shelf.
OTR and WVTR Stated on Every Quotation
The barrier figure is on the quote, not buried in a datasheet you never see.
Sustainability Claim Without a Certificate Behind It
Risk: An unsubstantiated compostable or recycled claim fails retailer and marketplace review.

High-Barrier Retort Pouches Overview
Shelf-Stable Ready Meals Without Heavy Cans or Jars — Digital printed retort pouches designed for high-temperature sterilization, offering long shelf life at ambient temperature.
Shelf-stable ready meals without the weight and breakage of cans or glass. Our retort pouches survive 121–135°C autoclave sterilization, and digital printing keeps trial runs small. One honest note: digital inks on retort structures have temperature limits — we use retort-rated ink sets and will flag artwork that risks scuffing or discoloration in the autoclave.
High-Barrier Retort Pouches
Using food-grade multi-layer film structures (PET/AL/NY/CPP), our retort pouches withstand 116–135°C sterilization. Ideal for curries, ready meals, baby food, pet food and fermented specialties like kimchi. Digital printing available starting from low MOQs.
What digital printed retort pouches are NOT
- • NOT unlimited print freedom. Retort temperatures stress inks and adhesives. Very heavy ink coverage and some pigments can scuff or shift color at 121–135°C — we spec retort-rated inks and will tell you if your artwork needs adjustment.
- • NOT recyclable or compostable. The PET/AL/NY/CPP foil laminate that makes retort possible is a landfill structure in most markets. If an end-of-life claim drives your brand, retort is the wrong technology.
- • NOT a valve product. Retort sterilization kills fermenting cultures, so no degassing valve is needed — that's roughly $0.20/bag saved, but it also means retort can't replace a valve for live, gas-producing products.
- • NOT skip-validation packaging. Seal integrity and burst testing after retort are mandatory before commercial runs; we include this in onboarding, not as an upsell.

The Fermented Food Showdown: VitoPouch vs. Glass vs. Valve
The Science of Sterilization & Degassing
Fermented foods (like artisan kimchi, sauerkraut, or hot sauces) are traditionally packed in glass jars or pouches equipped with one-way degassing valves to prevent "pouch bloating" caused by active yeast and lactic acid bacteria. However, this adds high costs and operational headaches.
The VitoPouch Retort Solution:
When you pack in our VitoPouch retort pouches and run them through a commercial sterilization autoclave (121°C–130°C for 30 minutes), **all active gas-producing organisms are completely pasteurized**. Since no further fermentation occurs inside the sealed bag, **no outgassing happens, rendering degassing valves 100% redundant.**
Glass Jars
Reusable but logistically heavy and environmentally taxing.
- Heavy weight (approx. 2,500 kg per 5k units)
- High breakage rate during shipping
- Stick-on label branding only (limited visual impact)
- ✓ Reusable by end consumers
Degassing Valve Pouches
Uses a one-way plastic valve to vent fermentation gas.
- Bulky, expensive plastic backflow valves
- Valve can warp/leak under retort sterilization
- High mechanical assembly failure rates
- ✓ Keeps raw/non-sterilized ferment active
Retort VitoPouch
Unbreakable heat-resistant laminated structure without valve.
- ✓ **Zero Valve Cost** (saves over $0.20 per piece)
- ✓ 100% shelf-stable without refrigeration
- ✓ Flat featherweight (50 kg per 5,000 bags)
- ✓ Stunning full-bleed edge-to-edge digital print
What Is Retort Packaging?

4-Layer Retort Structure
Multi-Layer Retort Structure
Our retort pouches feature a 4-layer structure: PET (outer layer for printing), Aluminum foil (barrier layer), Nylon/OPA (puncture resistance), and CPP (heat-seal inner layer). This structure resists high heat, pressure and prevents delamination.
Outer print layer
Aluminum foil barrier
Nylon puncture support
High-temp sealant
High-Temperature Sterilization
Withstands 121–135°C for 30–50 Minutes
Our retort pouches are designed for commercial sterilization at 121–135°C (up to 250°F) for 30–50 minutes without seal failure. Perfect for retort processing lines producing shelf-stable ready meals.
Extreme Barrier Protection
Oxygen, Moisture & Light Barrier
The aluminum foil layer provides extreme barrier protection: keeps oxygen out and flavor in, controls moisture to protect texture, shields from light to reduce nutrient loss. Maintains food quality for extended shelf life.
Strong Hermetic Seals
Designed to Prevent Leaks and Bursting
Our retort pouches feature strong, hermetic seals with optimized seal width and corner radius. Designed to prevent leaks and survive retort pressure without bursting, ensuring product safety and integrity.
Ready-to-Heat Convenience
Easy to Open, Ready to Eat
Optional convenience features include tear notches for easy opening, zippers for resealing, spout attachments for liquids, and microwave-friendly designs for heat-and-eat meals. No can opener or extra dishes needed.
Shelf-Stable Ready Meals
Less Packaging Weight, Same Protection
Replace heavy cans and glass jars with lightweight flexible retort pouches. Perfect for curries, chili, pasta sauces, soups, baby food, pet food and more. Stand-up or flat pouch formats available.
